UHF “Community Repeaters”
are “shared channel” 100 watt repeaters that are used
by multiple entities or companies. Each company is issued a “PL”
or private listening tone that is unique to their company. When
the “channel” is in use by another user sharing that
channel, the requesting user must wait until that other company
clears the channel, before the channel can be accessed by the requesting
user. Waiting times are short and conversations can be monitored
by other users on the channel. The channel owner is the licensee
and individual users are not required to obtain an FCC license,
so therefore there is no waiting to access radio service. |

800 MHz SMR (Specialized Mobile Radio) – uses several
radio frequency channels at a given site that are all controlled
by a Central Site Controller. This controller provides authorized
users to immediately access any open channel on the system for privacy
radio calls on a push-to-talk basis. Each radio has a unique ID,
and only authorized users are allowed access to the system. Subsequently,
there is total privacy between users, and instant access to communicate
with other radios on the users “talk group” or “fleet”.
The system also allows for push-to-talk telephone interconnect and
direct dialing so land line calls can be placed to or from a mobile
radio user utilizing a 7-digit number assigned to the radio. The
channel owner is the licensee and individual users are not required
to obtain an FCC license, so therefore there is no waiting to access
radio service. |
